Bread was a British television sitcom produced by the BBC and screened from 1986 to 1991.
The series focused on the Boswell family of Liverpool, led by its matriarch Nellie (Jean Boht) through a number of ups and downs as they tried to make their way through life in Thatcher's Britain without any visible means of support. Nellie's husband Freddie left her for another woman, and their five children (in age order Joey, Jack, Adrian, Aveline and Billy) continued to live in the family home and contributed money to the central family fund, largely through benefit fraud and the sale of stolen goods.
Once the most watched television comedy in Britain, one of the primary reasons for the show's success was its use of "soap opera"-style cliffhangers. This meant that viewers had to watch each week to see how the previous week's story would resolve. This also meant that each episode was not self-contained, but the plot unfolded as the series progressed - something which was very unusual for a comedy at the time.
Only the first three series have so far been made available on DVD, although a complete boxed set containing all seven series is rumoured to be released in 2011 to coincide with the show's 25th anniversary.
RELEASE DETAILS
I found this old episode while going through a batch of my old VHS tapes. It is the final show of the fourth series - a special Christmas episode in which the Boswell family all travel together to Rome.
Over the course of the episode it becomes apparent that everybody is aiming to achieve something different from their holiday ... Nellie hopes to catch a glimpse of the Pope, Billy believes it will improve his strained marriage to Julie, Adrian thinks he might find a new relationship, and Grandad wants to relive a past one. And, as always, Joey isn't letting his plans on to anyone! Utlimately an unexpected event unites the family in a way they never expected.
Unfortunately the tape I recorded from had a bit of a glitch at the beginning which caused the video to vanish for a few seconds, and then the audio to race for a second. By twenty seconds into the video everything's fine again, but I decided not to trim these faulty bits off of the beginning since the opening music continues normally through most of it.
